Turning a Tired East Hills Bathroom into a Spacious Family Retreat

Project Snapshot

Damien and Kate had already renovated most of their East Hills home, and this main bathroom was the last room holding it back, tight, cluttered, and nowhere near ready to show off to friends and family. Over four weeks, we stripped the room back to its original shell and rebuilt it around the layout they’d been dreaming of: a full-sized bath, a separate shower, and a sense of space neither of them thought was possible in a room this size. It’s become one of our favourite bathroom renovations in East Hills, and a good example of what’s possible when a design brief and a bit of problem-solving come together.

Our Approach

The renovation began with careful preparation and planning, followed by the structural, plumbing and electrical work needed to bring Damien and Kate’s new layout to life.

1. Protect and Strip Out

Floor and wall protection, along with dust barriers, were installed before the bathroom was stripped back to the existing wall studs and concrete slab.

2. Confirm the Layout

The following day, we met with Damien and Kate on site to confirm the positioning of every fixture and fitting. Once the layout was finalised and all materials had arrived, the renovation schedule was ready to go.

3. Complete the Essential Works

Drainage was relocated to suit the new layout, electrical work was upgraded for the new lighting, and false walls were built to house the in-wall toilet cistern. The bowed walls were also battened out to create a flat surface for tiling.

4. Bring the Design Together

Damien and Kate selected mitred-edge tiling with an epoxy finish, LED lighting, wall sconces and custom stainless steel strip drains to achieve the high-quality finish they wanted.

5. Complete the Fit-Out

With the structural and finishing work in place, the bathroom was brought together into the spacious, polished result Damien and Kate had envisioned.

The Challenge

The real test of this project was fitting a bath, a shower, a vanity and a toilet into one room without it feeling crowded, while still keeping that open, free-flowing feel Damien and Kate wanted. The layout that made this work meant relocating the drains, which was more complicated than it sounds: the concrete slab sat around 200mm above the ground, with no clearance to work underneath the house.

Our first option was removing the entire slab to access the plumbing, but the cost started creeping too close to budget for comfort. Instead, we got hands-on and manually dug out the ground beneath the house, just enough to slide in and reroute the drainage ourselves. It wasn’t the easiest way to solve the problem, but it kept the project on budget without compromising on the layout Damien and Kate actually wanted.

The Solution

With the new layout in place, the finishing details were chosen to give Damien and Kate the custom, high-quality result they wanted.

  • In-wall toilet cistern: A false wall created a clean, built-in look while keeping the toilet area streamlined.
  • Lighting: Electrical upgrades supported LED fixtures and wall sconces, adding warmth and character to the room.
  • Mitred tile edges: Epoxy-finished mitred edges added a precise, high-end detail to the tiling.
  • Custom strip drains: Stainless steel strip drains completed the clean, considered look.

Results

The finished bathroom delivers exactly what Damien and Kate set out to achieve, combining a spacious layout, practical features and high-quality finishes, even after the project encountered unexpected challenges.

A Floor Plan That Ticked Every Box

A carefully considered layout gave Damien and Kate the spacious bathroom they wanted, with room for both a bath and shower.

High-Quality Finishes Throughout

The team delivered the high standard of finishes Damien and Kate wanted, creating a bathroom they’re proud to show off.

Overcoming the Unexpected

Despite unforeseen digging and drainage issues, the team kept the project on schedule and within budget without compromising the finished result.

What Our Clients Said

“John, Johnny and the team did an amazing job of renovating our bathroom. I did get a few quotes and John stood out for his transparency and ease of communication, and that continued throughout the renovation. The team kept to the daily schedule that was provided before the work commenced, which I really appreciated! The workmanship is flawless, the project was well managed, and I couldn’t be happier with the end result. I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again!”
