From Tight Spaces to Functional Luxury Bathroom Renovation in Sydney CBD

Project Overview

Kathryn approached Better Bathrooms Australia to rework two extremely compact wet areas within her recently acquired apartment located in Sydney CBD. The goal was to improve usability, introduce a more open feel, and achieve a polished finish while remaining within a strict budget boundary.

The assignment covered a complete removal of existing fittings across both the main washroom and adjoining private wash space, followed by a full rebuild tailored to space efficiency and modern aesthetics.

Our Approach

Step 1: Understanding the Vision
The process began with understanding the client’s vision, which was heavily influenced by inspiration gathered online. While the ideas were strong, the existing room proportions meant many of them needed to be adapted to suit the actual constraints of the space.

Step 2: Exploring Layout Possibilities
We explored multiple layout and finish combinations, with a shared goal of creating interiors that felt more open and visually larger than their physical footprint.

Step 3: Design Development & Approval
Scaled floor plans were developed and formally approved before any construction began, ensuring clarity and alignment on the final direction.

Step 4: Refinement During Delivery
As the project progressed, the client contributed additional design refinements. These were assessed and seamlessly integrated into the agreed scope, allowing the build to evolve without disrupting workflow.

With all planning finalised and the scope clearly defined, the renovation proceeded with confidence, supported by a structured system that helped maintain momentum and avoid delays throughout delivery.

Key Challenge & How It Was Managed

We knew this was a busy residential building, so noise complaints were a real risk. The client also wanted the renovation completed quickly so she could move back in as soon as possible.

To manage this, we took a proactive approach by printing branded calendars and placing them in all mailboxes before work started. We included advance notice of noisy days, apologised for any disruption, and offered help if residents were planning their own renovations.

As a result, we received zero complaints throughout the project and were regularly thanked by residents in the hallways and lifts for the early communication.

What We’d Improve Next Time

The project ran efficiently overall with no major disruptions. The only refinement identified for future projects would be arranging parking permits in advance for site vehicles to improve logistics and avoid avoidable fines during delivery in tight urban areas.
